About
With her double release “Dzisiaj w Betlejem” and “Lento. Cantabile semplice” (after Henryk Gorecki), Andreya Casablanca releases two covers that oscillate between memory, origin, and spirituality - created as part of her commissioned work for the Popkultur Festival Berlin 2025.
They are an idiosyncratic approach to her childhood in a Catholic Polish family. Andreya reinterprets the traditional Polish Christmas carol “Dzisiaj w Betlejem” (“Today in Bethlehem”) in a psychedelic-indie manner. The familiar hymn, which Andreya herself described as “the first pop banger I heard in my childhood,” becomes a rock-heavy Christmas anthem.
The second release, “Lento. Cantabile semplice,” is based on Henryk Górecki's Third Symphony - a work that was first reinterpreted in popculture in the 1990s by Beth Gibbons (Portishead). Andreya translates Górecki's spiritual heaviness into an industrial, minimalist soundscape in which voice, space, and synths merge.
Both songs are part of an ongoing artistic process: a search for belonging, for one's own place between tradition and departure, between Poland and Berlin, church and club.
A quiet, wintry release that makes the exploration of spirituality and questions of origin tangible as sound.
